Psychiatry
This is the branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in mental health and are qualified to assess both the mental and physical aspects of psychological conditions.
Common conditions treated in psychiatry include depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, personality disorders, and substance use disorders. Treatment approaches may involve medications, psychotherapy (talk therapy), or a combination of both. In some cases, advanced treatments like electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) or newer neuromodulation techniques may be used.
Psychiatry plays a vital role in promoting mental well-being and supporting individuals to lead functional, healthy lives. It also contributes significantly to public health by addressing the growing global burden of mental illness.
